A man was found dead Thursday morning in Oakland near a Chevron station at 35th Street near San Pablo Avenue at the Emeryville border.
A security guard told NBC Bay Area he heard four or five shots and saw someone in a black Jeep drive away. He also said he comforted the man in his arms before he died. "He was just gasping for breath," the guard said.
Oakland police said the ShotSpotter system alerted officers to a shooting about 4:30 a.m. When police got there, they found a man in his 30s or 40s, dead at the scene.
