Man Dies After Crashing Car into Tree on I-580 Near Oakland

A man was killed early Saturday morning in a fatal car crash on I-580 near Oakland, according to the California Highway Patrol.

A man was driving a silver Honda Odyssey minivan westbound on I-580 near Mountain Boulevard when he went off the road and struck a tree on the connector ramp, authorities said.

A witness called 911 and reported the accident, but when officers arrived on scene around 2:10 a.m., the driver had already died, officials said. Most of the damage was directly to the driver's door.

The freeway was closed for a while when officers were conducting their investigation.

The CHP said the man may have been driving very fast, probably around 100 miles per hour.

They do not believe that drugs or alcohol played a part in this accident, officials said.

Officers are still investigating the cause of the collision and are asking witnesses to call (510) 450-3821 if they have more information.
