Man Drowns in Modesto Reservoir While Swimming with Family

The 4th of July weekend turned tragic at the Modesto Reservoir when a San Jose man died while spending time with his family.

The man, who was in his forties, was swimming without a life vest just after 1 p.m. Saturday when he began to struggle in the water, police said. He yelled to his family for help, but they weren’t able to see through the murky waters in order to find him. The victim’s family told police that they had been swimming approximately 50 yards from the shoreline.

First responders located his just after 5 p.m.

This is the fifth drowning in Stanislaus County reservoirs since May 15. None of those victims were wearing a life vest, police cautioned.
