A gruesome discovery outside a peninsula 24 Hour Fitness shocked people on the way to their Sunday morning workout.
Around 8 a.m. someone found the body of a man who had left the fitness center in at San Mateo's Borel Square just a few hours earlier.
The unidentified man had been stabbed according to witnesses.
Police aren't releasing very many details on the case except to say that a body was discovered in some bushes next to a BMW sport utility vehicle and that all indications are that he was the victim of a homicide.
It's believed that the victim, who is described as a 41-year-old male from Redwood City, was killed sometime between midnight and 2 a.m.
A portion of the parking lot remained closed off by police tape Sunday afternoon as investigators searched for clues.
