Man Shot During Attempted Robbery in Salinas

A man was shot during an attempted robbery in Salinas early Sunday morning, police said. The shooting was reported at 1:51 a.m. Sunday at Santa Maria Street and South Madeira Avenue. The victim had just left a party in the 500 block of Santa Maria Street and was walking to his car when a suspect approached and demanded his wallet, according to police. The victim said he did not have any money and pushed the suspect away. As he tried to run away, he was shot in the back, police said. The victim drove home and then to a hospital where a doctor determined a bullet had lodged near his spinal cord. He was flown to a Bay Area hospital to undergo surgery, according to police. The suspect, described as a Hispanic man who is about 5 feet 4 inches tall and was wearing a cowboy hat, black leather jacket, black T-shirt and gray colored jeans, had not been found as of this morning, police said.
