San Francisco Public Works Employee Fatally Shot Near SF General Hospital

A San Francisco Department of Public Works employee was shot and killed near San Francisco General Hospital Wednesday morning, according to police.

San Francisco police arrested Michael Higginbotham, 26, in connection with the 8 a.m. death of Jermaine Jackson, who was cleaning grafitti off 25th and Vermont streets for the city. Sources said they believe this is a likely gang shooting.

Family members said Jackson was good guy who was turning his life around.

The mayor also weighed in.

“This is a tragedy, and I am deeply saddened by the circumstances surrounding the death of one of our own, a dedicated employee of Public Works," Mayor Ed Lee said in a statement. "This was a young man who worked very hard to build a good life for himself and his children, and was committed to his work keeping the City of San Francisco and our neighborhoods clean. This is a tragic instance of a life cut short."
