Man Stabbed to Death at San Jose Homeless Shelter

Police in San Jose are investigating the city's 26th homicide of year, a fatal stabbing of a man at a homeless shelter.

Just after midnight,  police were called to a homeless shelter near the intersection of West Julian and Montgomery streets, just a few blocks north of Diridon Station.

When officers arrived, they found a man with stab wounds. Christopher Bowman, 37, died minutes later.

Officers detained a 25-year-old suspect in connection with Bowman's stabbing. Matthew Jacobsen was taken into custody by San Jose police without incident.

Police say they think both men stayed at the shelter and got into a fight just before the stabbing.

The Julian Street Inn is operated by InnVision the Way Home and provides 70 shelter beds for men and women with mental illnesses.

"This is a very tragic incident. We regret it deeply," InnVision Shelter spokeswoman Maria Duzon said.

The staff is cooperating with the police investigation and focusing their efforts on providing care for their clients, Duzon said.

The Santa Clara County medical examiner's office has not yet released the victim's name.
