A San Jose Man, Woman and Child Die in Saturday Night Fire

The three perished in a fire first reported around 11:10 p.m. at a multi-building apartment complex in the 3000 block of Bridgeport Court, San Jose Fire Capt. Mary Gutierrez said.

A man, woman and young child died in a two-alarm fire in a San Jose apartment late Saturday night.

The fire was first reported around 11:10 p.m. at a multi-building apartment complex in the 3000 block of Bridgeport Court, San Jose Fire Capt. Mary Gutierrez said.

Three other people, including a San Jose police officer on the scene who aided in a rescue during the fire, were taken to area hospitals after suffering smoke inhalation in the blaze, Gutierrez said.

The Mercury News said today that the deceased were two grandparents, Bulmaro and Mariana Maldonado and their 4-year-old granddaughter Kyra. The young girl's mother, Cecilia Maldonado managed to escape alive.

Fire crews responded to multiple 911 calls, including reports that there were people trapped inside the second-floor apartment on fire.

Firefighters attacked the blaze and kept it from spreading to other apartments, knocking it down shortly after midnight. Fire personnel confirmed that three people inside the affected unit, identified only as a man, woman and young child had died from their injuries.

Gutierrez said the apartment where the fire occurred was severely damaged.

The fire also displaced some fifty-six residents from the same building. Fire crews and investigators are expected to remain on the scene throughout the night to mop up hot spots and investigate what caused the fire.

"It's not an easy investigation, it's going to be a long investigation," Gutierrez said.

The American Red Cross was summoned to help find housing for the displaced residents.
