Manslaughter Charges in Palo Alto Assault After Victim Dies

The alleged assailants in a Dec. 21 attack in downtown Palo Alto are now charged with manslaughter after the death of the victim.

Authorities in Santa Clara County have filed an involuntary manslaughter charge against 28-year-old Cupertino resident Neil Brian Rotroff. As for Akshay Vijay Mastakar, he is now charged with a felony count of accessory to involuntary manslaughter.

The victim, in his 20s, has not been identified.

The pair of suspects are the alleged attackers in a fight police discovered in downtown Palo Alto. Cops saw a man lying on the ground and a car speeding away.

The victim apparently took one punch to the face from Rotroff after he got into an argument with a group of fellow bar-goers, according to police. He fell to the pavement, hit his head and never regained consciousness.

Both suspects are free on bail ahead of a Jan. 20 court date.
