Marin Mountain Bikers Targeted with Spike Strip: Report

A spike strip covered with rusty screws was recently discovered on a bike trail in Marin. The booby trap, set up less than a mile from the White Hill entrance to Camp Tamarancho, was apparently aimed to attack bikes and their riders, the SingleTracks blog reported. It has not been identified who was responsible.

The blog post expressed concern for the safety of bikers, which they say has already been compromised because of excessive regulation by cops and unnecessary speeding fines.

A post on the Camp Tamaracho Flow Trail’s Facebook page criticized the area’s land management for favoring safety for hikers and equestrians over bikers.

The long rant urged land managers to improve their management of the entire public trail network, and give an equal amount of attention to every park and trail.

No injuries have been linked to the spike strip, but the Facebook post warned readers to “Stay safe out there.”

The Marin County Sheriff's Office said in a press release that they were investigating the booby trap device, which they described as a 27-inch long spike strip including 34-two inch screws protruding from a tube, which was located on a single track trail on private property adjacent to the White Hill Open Space Preserve in the hills above Woodacre.

Since the discovery of the spike strip, deputies and rangers have stepped up patrol of the area, the sheriff's office said. If visitors locate similar devices, please contact the Marin County Sheriff’s Office immediately.
