Martinez City Council to Consider Cannabis Cultivation Ordinance

The Martinez City Council is poised to take a conservative stand on marijuana cultivation for personal use, scheduled on Wednesday to consider an ordinance limiting indoor growth to six plants per residence — what state law already allows.

The proposed Martinez "personal cultivation of cannabis" ordinance also prohibits any outside cultivation.

Martinez, like some other Bay Area cities, has been in a sort of holding pattern concerning its marijuana laws, regarding both medicinal and non-medicinal uses. Also, as in some other cities, the city has been passing "urgency" ordinances limiting marijuana cultivation and sales until both local and state laws were clarified.

Martinez is also in the midst of crafting a "cannabis management program" that, unlike many of its neighboring cities, would include approving cannabis-related businesses. The initial plan being considered would include two retail operators, two deliverers, a manufacturer, a distributor and a testing lab (but no commercial cultivation).

Wednesday night's council meeting begins at 7 p.m. at City Hall, 525 Henrietta St.
