Memorial on Pier 14 Honors Kate Steinle

Nearly three months since his daughter was shot and killed in front of his eyes, Jim Steinle returned Saturday to Pier 14 in San Francisco.

He came with his family and friends to see the new memorial that honors his daughter, Kate Steinle.

At the private gathering, a bench was installed in honor of Kate by the port authority.

A plaque on the bench reads “Whatever’s good for your soul…do that.” That was Kate’s final post on Facebook on the day she died.

"We spoke almost every night and every night, closing our eyes, we’d say our prayers." Kate’s mother, Liz Steinle, said. "I still do that. I still talk to her. I have her phone and go through her pictures. There’s such solace in that we're such a close family."

Juan Francisco Lopez-Sanchez, 45, is charged with second-degree murder in the July 1 shooting of Kate as she walked with her father along the San Francisco waterfront.
