Mercedes Driver Speeds at 100 MPH, Dies in Crash: CHP

The driver of a Mercedes who appeared to be speeding at about 100 mph lost control of the car, rear-ended a Honda and died after being ejected onto a highway offramp in San Jose, according to the California Highway Patrol.

The man's death was reported shortly after 10 p.m. Sunday at the southbound Interstate Highway 880 onramp from the Alameda, the CHP said. Officer Lee Ross said he did not know the man's age or city of residence on Monday morning.

CHP officers said that witnesses had seen the Mercedes traveling at nearly 100 mph before losing control and striking the back of a Honda.

The Honda then struck the center divider, the CHP said, and turned on its side. The Mercedes traveled across the southbound lanes of the highway, struck a dirt embankment. The driver was thrown out of the car and pronounced dead at the scene.

All three inside the Honda were taken to Valley Medical Center after complaining of pain. Alcohol has not been ruled out as a factor in the collision.

In a separate fatal accident in Walnut Creek, a 24-year-old woman was fatally struck about 11 p.m. on Sunday by a Mercedes while she was waiting for help after her car broke down, the CHP said.

Any witnesses are asked to contact Officer Jared Strubeck at 408-467-5400.
