Millbrae Considers Electronic Billboards Along Highway 101

The Millbrae City Council is considering putting up electronic billboards along Highway 101 to help promote its area businesses.

Council members will consider proposals from companies to build electronic billboards. If approved, the billboards may be up this year.

"We always want to encourage more visibility for Millbrae," Mayor Wayne Lee said. "If done correctly it could mean a good impact for the community and the region as a whole."

But safety remains a concern, especially during the evening hours. Many argue the bright lights from electronic billboards are a distraction.

"We've got enough distractions on that highway as it is," John Stein said.

Stein said he would like to see a boost in business in the area, but is not convinced a flashing sign is the best way to do it.

"As long as could show that it would be safe for the drivers and not cause accidents," he said. "I'd be for it."
