Mineta San Jose International Airport served over 14.3 million passengers in 2018, breaking its record and marking an almost 15 percent increase from the previous year.
The airport set its previous record of 14.2 million passengers in August 2001, and it has now seen six years of steady growth. Airport officials credit new domestic and international routes for its spike in passengers.
"SJC travelers will be surprised and delighted with new service upgrades in 2019, to include nonstop flights to the places where they want to go," John Aitken, director of aviation, said in a news release.
Travelers later this year will be able to access facial recognition for expedited travel, lounge expansions and new food and drink options, including Shake Shack, Chick-fil-A and The Great American Bagel.
New routes this year will include nonstop domestic flights to El Paso, Seattle, Long Beach, Nashville, Raleigh and Hawaii.
The airport is the second largest in the Bay Area, after San Francisco International Airport, and intends to continue its growth as the city plans an expansion of its overall transit infrastructure beginning with Diridon Station.
