Mother's Day, Courageous Kids Day Helps Sick Kids Smile

Mother’s Day wasn’t the only special day taking place on May 8. This year, the annual holiday shared a date American Cancer Society’s ‘Courageous Kids’ day at Great America in Santa Clara.

For Bay Area residents Monique Manning and her son, Dillon, who suffers from a brain tumor, the Courageous Kids day allowed them to take a break from trips to the hospital and do something special – at no cost.

“It’s a really great opportunity,” Monique Manning said. “My kids and I get to come here and have a really great time. It’s a much needed break. Brain tumors don’t tend to go away.”

Dillon is one of nearly 600 kids enjoying the annual Courageous Kids Day.

“This is a day away from cancer for these families,” said Bob Steinfeld of the American Cancer Society. “It’s a day they can kind of forget about the hospital and just have fun.”

Along with games, mothers and their kids had a chance to take pictures with their favorite cartoon characters, as well as retired 49er and four-time Superbowl Champ Ronnie Lott.

“You get to really see their heart,” Lott said of the event. “You get to see the heart because they care about their kids and they care about how their kids have endured.”
