Big-Rig Crash Blocks Traffic on I-880, Spawns Multiple Accidents, One Fatal

A big-rig was involved in a collision with multiple cars on Interstate Highway 880 in San Jose Tuesday morning, blocking lanes and spawning multiple accidents, one of them fatal, according to the California Highway Patrol.

The initial collision happened on southbound I-880 at Brokaw Road about 8:30 a.m., CHP officials said. A witness reported the big-rig hit cars, spun out and struck other vehicles, according to the CHP.

The collision left the big-rig across all lanes of traffic, CHP officials said.

In the middle of the backup, just north of state Highway 237, a motorcyclist was killed in a separate crash. Another Sig-alert was issued at 9:34 a.m. closing two southbound lanes at 237, according to the CHP. The Santa Clara County medical examiner's office was called to the scene. Southbound lanes of I-880 near 237 reopened at about 12:30 pm.
