“Nanny Government” Says Skiers Should Wear Helmets

New legislation would require helmets for underage skiers.

First bicycles, now skiing and snowboarding. A state legislature wants to extend a law requiring helmets to winter sports.

According to the Los Angeles Times, State Sen. Leland Yee (D-San Francisco) has introduced legislation to require helmets for underage skiers. The Senator expressed concern about the number of head injuries suffered in the sports. Parents could be fined up to $25 for more than one violation, the Times said.

Sen. Tom Harman (R-Huntington Beach) said he was not a fan of the bill unless there was compelling data that showed the problem was extensive enough to require government intervention, the Times said.

Harmon worried about what he called "nanny government" saying the bill may go too far.

"Wouldn’t common sense say you should be careful when you are skiing through trees?" he told the Times.
