New Safety Concerns Over Gas Pipeline in San Carlos

New safety concerns are surrounding a major gas pipeline that Peninsula residents have long worried about.

Pipeline 147 runs along Brittan Avenue, through the heart of San Carlos, and it is nearly four miles long. During a retrofit project, PG&E workers discovered bulges and weak spots in the line.

They quickly reported it to San Carlos city officials, and they lowered the pressure in the line. But lawmakers are concerned that pg&e isn't doing enough.

"It raises a question in my mind, 'Should we maybe take some more significant step and just say let's be safe and stop using the line until we can be sure it is safe?'" San Carlos city councilman Mark Olbert said.

"So if there's a problem in this particular instance with that pipe, where else in that system is a problem existing that won't be identified perhaps for another year or two?" State Sen. Jerry Hill (D-San Mateo) said.

PG&E released a statement saying, "Nothing is going to stop us from keeping our customers safe."

In 2013, this same pipeline caused issues, and the city of San Carlos tried to get the line shut down.
