New Bay Area Earthquake Map Shows Hazard Hot Spots

A new map is answering the question: how likely is a major earthquake where you live?

The map was released by the USGS in Menlo Park.

The faults in blue and green have a very low rupture hazard over the next 30 years.

Yellow faults have a 6 percent risk of a 6.7 or larger quake in the next three decades. The orange and red lines have nearly a 25 percent chance of a major quake in the coming three decades. One of those faults runs right along the East Bay foothills, a densely populated area.
