New Lake County Fire Downgraded to 215 Acres, 30 Percent Contained: Cal Fire

The Peterson Fire in Lake County has been downgraded to 215 acres and is 30 percent contained, Cal Fire officials said Sunday.

The blaze was initially reported at about 5:30 p.m. Saturday. Whipped up by the wind, it scorched over 75 acres of hard-to-access land near Kelseyville, west of Clear Lake, officials said.

Fire officials initially said that the blaze jumped to 400 acres at a "dangerous pace" by scorching dead grass, dried brush and climbing trees. Its estimated size was reduced Sunday due to "aerial mapping," Cal Fire said.

A new fire is growing rapidly in Lake County and it has already burned down 400 acres, according to Cal Fire officials.

Firefighters are battling the Peterson Fire off Peterson Lane and Adobe Creek Road. The Rocky and Jerusalem fires scorched thousands of acres just 20 miles west of this new blaze, officials said.

Fire departments from Kelseyville and South Lake, the Lake County Sheriff's Department and PG&E crews are at the scene. Fifty fire engines, 26 fire crews, 15 bulldozers, nine water tenders, four airtankers and three helicopters are being used to douse the flames.

No information has been made available on evacuations or the cause of the fire.
