New Sketch Released in Rash of Attacks at East Bay Apartments

The Contra Costa County Sheriff's Office has released a new sketch of a man they say attacked and tried to rape a woman Saturday in the same apartment complex where at least four other sexual assaults or attempted attacks have been reported since June.

Five cases of sexual assault have been reported at the Park Regency apartment complex over the past few months, the sheriff's office says, the latest attack was reported Saturday at about 6:45 p.m.

A 43-year-old woman was leaving her apartment when a man grabbed her from behind and attempted to force her back inside. The victim broke free from her attacker, but fell down some stairs as she fled.

The attacker in this Saturday's incident is described as a white man about 5 feet 9 inches tall with a medium build. He had brown hair and facial hair. He was wearing black jeans, a black T-shirt, and a black baseball cap.

A spokesman with the sheriff's office said Monday that it is not yet clear whether this attacker is responsible for a Sept. 16 incident at the  complex in which a 27-year-old resident was raped inside her apartment. That attacker was described as a white man between 20 and 30 years old. He was about 6 feet tall and had a full beard, according to deputies.

Three other unrelated sexual assaults happened at the same apartment complex on June 30, July 6, and Aug. 10. The sheriff's office  arrested 22-year-old Antonio Mouton of Berkeley, on Aug. 10 for all three attacks after DNA allegedly linked him to the rape. Mouton pleaded not guilty in August to charges of rape, two counts of attempted rape and three counts of burglary.

Management has boosted security at the complex since the most recent incident was reported. Two security guards patrol the complex from the front gate to the back. Guards check each vehicle that enters the Park Regency complex to make sure they are either a resident or the guest of a resident.

Crews are also working to install a fence and additional security cameras at the front of the  property.
