A 28-year-old Newark man blew off several fingers on New Year's Day while setting off illegal fireworks, police said Friday.
Police Sgt. Manuel Deserpa said the man lit an illegal firework, which police believe was either a M-80 or a M-1000, outside several homes along the 6700 block of Cedar Boulevard in Newark about 12:30 a.m. on Thursday.
The firework exploded in the man's hand and he lost several fingers, Deserpa said, adding that he had no further details.
The man was taken to a local hospital to be treated for major but non-lifethreatening injuries to his hand.
He was not arrested.
