Oakland Animal Services At 200% Capacity; Asks For Dog Fostering Help

Now is a particularly good time to foster or adopt a dog and help Oakland Animal Services, which is twice over capacity.

According to East Bay Express, the organization needs help fostering large dogs. Board member Nicole Perelman told the publication that the large number of dogs needing homes could correlate with rising rents and evictions. The shelter is presently at 200 percent of what it can normally handle, leading to space problems.

Oakland Animal Services director Rebecca Katz said on the organization website that she'd particularly like to find foster homes for dogs who have been there more than two months.

“Fostering is a great way to help an animal on a temporary basis, for a month or longer,” she said. “We like to think of it like a ‘lending library’ where people can check out a dog and always bring it back if it is not the right fit.”

NBC Owned Television Stations and Telemundo have organized a Clear The Shelters animal adoption event on August 15 to help thousands of organizations clear the shelters nationwide.

Even if you can't adopt a pet, you can still help a shelter by volunteering or donating.
