The Oakland Police Department on Friday released preliminary statistics on police activity during Thursday's Independence Day celebrations.

Police said there were 12 arrests, 17 vehicles towed, 101 citations issued for vehicle code violations, 77 citations issued for fireworks violations, 200 pounds of fireworks recovered and nine firearms recovered.

There were arrests in connection with people associated with celebratory gunfire, police said.

The police department, at the California Highway Patrol's request, also responded Thursday at 11:38 p.m. to approximately 200 people participating in illegal sideshow and firework activity near 42nd Avenue at Interstate Highway 880. The police department assisted CHP with vehicle code enforcement and in dispersing the sideshow participants, police said.
