Oakland Police Release Photos of Persons of Interest in Musician's Death

Oakland police released photos Thursday of a man and a woman who they said are persons of interest in the shooting death of 26-year-old musician Emilio Nevarez outside a bar in downtown Oakland early Sunday morning.

Police said Nevarez, a bass player and vocalist for the punk rock bank The Lucky Eejits, was packing up his equipment when a stray bullet struck him in the 400 block of 14th Street at about 1:15 a.m. Sunday.

Nevarez wasn't the intended target of the gunfire. Police said two people were engaged in an argument unrelated to him when someone started shooting, according to police.

No one has been arrested for the shooting so far.

Oakland police said homicide investigators obtained the photos from video surveillance footage that shows the shooting suspect's vehicle and two persons of interest who were with the suspect the night of the shooting.

Police said investigators are asking the public for information about the identity of the persons of interest as well as about the suspect's vehicle, which they said appears to be an early 2000's Mercedes Benz four-door silver sedan S-series, either model 430 or model 500.

Police also released photos of that car.

People with information should call the Oakland Police Department's homicide section at (510) 238-3821 or Crime Stoppers of Oakland at 510-777-8572.

Police said Oakland-based Pet Food Express has put up $5,000 in reward money for information leading to an arrest of the suspect in the case.

That amount brings the total reward to $25,000, police said.

Nevarez's family plans to have a memorial service for him early next week after the Alameda County coroner completes an autopsy and releases his body to them.
