Oakland Police Unveil Plan to End Sideshows

Oakland Police are trying to stop an old problem from resurfacing and spinning out of control.

Sean Whent, acting police chief, on Monday unveiled a plan to end sideshows in town.

"I'm enacting a plan of enforcement collaboration and community involvement, education and prevention," he said. "Beginning immediately I am redirecting crime reduction teams (to) intervene, interrupt and prevent sideshow activity."

The chief is also calling on the California Highway Patrol, clergy and community for help.

It's the same strategy Oakland Police used several years ago when sideshow activity was a huge problem in parts of East Oakland.

Monday's announcement comes at the heels of three people wounded during a weekend shooting at a sideshow at 106th Avenue and Foothill Boulevard. A woman in her 20s from Walnut Creek also was hit and is in critical condition.
