Before earning worldwide fans, a record deal with Atlantic and a Grammy nomination for Best Urban Contemporary Album this year, singer Kehlani, 20, worked at Park Burger in her hometown of Oakland.

"It was fun, I got to eat really good burgers all the time and make milkshakes," she said in a new interview with cult favorite music journalist Nardwuar the Human Serviette.

She told Nardwuar that having a lot of tattoos made it tough to find a job in the Bay Area. "I really couldn't get hired at a lot of places except for places that hired people that looked like me, like Hot Topic. . . Park Burger, they were very hipster-y so they enjoyed the little hipster vibe that I was giving them."

Nardwuar's interview is full of Bay Area references, from the Eastmont Mall in East Oakland to presenting Kehlani with a record from '80s Oakland R&B stars Tony Toni Tone, whose member D'Wayne Wiggins was her first music manager.

As Kehlani continues to work on her own original music, she's also been a contributing guest to other high-profile work, including a duet with former One Direction member Zayn Malik called "Wrong" on his recently released solo debut, "Mind of Mine."
