The city of Oakland will pay $2.2 million to settle a claim by an ex-Black Panther leader who was injured in 2015 after an Oakland councilwoman punched and pushed her.
An Alameda County jury in January awarded more than $4 million in punitive damages to ex-Black Panther Elaine Brown in a civil lawsuit she filed against the city and Oakland councilwoman Desley Brooks.
The city appealed that that ruling but the San Francisco Chronicle reports Oakland's city council approved the settlement unanimously Tuesday. Brooks was not at the meeting.
The payment includes $1.2 million in damages for Brown and $1 million in attorneys' fees.
The jury found Brooks shoved Brown inside a restaurant during an argument over housing causing her to fall and injure her shoulder.
