One Dead, One Critical in Oakland Shooting

A shooting left one man dead and another in critical condition Friday night in East Oakland, according to police.

The man who died has been identified by the Oakland Tribune as freelancer photographer Lionel "Ray" Fluker. "Lionel worked for the Oakland Tribune over the years, initially as an unpaid intern, simply because he loved the field of photojournalism," said Nick Lammers, director of photography.

The shooting occurred near Seminary Avenue and MacArthur Boulevard, near the Mills College campus, at about 10:15 p.m., police said.

Fluker is not believed to be the intended target of the shooting and was simply driving by a gas station at the corner of Seminary Ave. and MacArthur Blvd. when he was shot.

The person who was believed to be the target was located near the intersection of Seminary Avenue and Monadnock Way shortly after the shooting. He was transported to a local hospital in critical condition with at least one gunshot wound, police said.

Fluker was pronounced deceased at the scene, according to police.

No suspects are in custody and the motive for the shooting remains under investigation, police said.
