One Year of Water Left in California, According to NASA Scientist

As California’s drought rapidly worsens, NASA Senior Water Cycle Scientist Jay Famiglietti warns Californians that the state’s water supply has been reduced to one year’s worth of water.

In an editorial published in the LA Times last week, Famiglietti not only comments on California’s current water levels, but the public’s involvement in water conservation.

“The public must take ownership of this issue,” Famiglietti wrote. “This crisis belongs to all of us – not just to a handful of decision-makers.”

Famiglietti proposes immediately focusing on mandatory water rationing, groundwater sustainability, and long-term water management in order to navigate through the rest of the drought, which could extend far beyond the next year.

This, he believes, will be more effective than California’s current plan, which according to Famiglietti, consists of “staying in emergency mode and praying for rain.”

Famiglietti pleads with readers in the title of his editorial, "Will you ration now?"
