Summer music festival season has arrived in the Bay Area, and it’s taking San Francisco by storm.
The popular Outside Lands Music Festival – known for its laidback music and having considerably less flower-power than Coachella – begins Friday, drawing thousands to Golden Gate Park.
In past years, classics like Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers and up-and-coming bands like Haim have delighted longtime fans and newbies alike. This year, headliners, including Radiohead, Lionel Richie, J. Cole, Lana Del Rey and dozens more, are all slated to brave the fog and perform at the three-day extravaganza.
The event is also famous for grouping regular folks with celebrities. Last year, Sir Patrick Stewart stopped by as did reality star Kim Kardashian, who was there to support husband Kanye West. Actress Vanessa Hudgens is a frequenter, when she's not on Broadway.
A pass that covers admission for Friday, Saturday and Sunday ranges from $325 to $355 and sells out in minutes, but scalpers and buyers trying to offload their own tickets can typically sell for higher prices.
According to event planners, that’s because there’s something that makes Outside Lands different from other music festivals.
“We have a very eclectic lineup,” said Greg Perloff, CEO of Another Planet Entertainment, the company puts on the show each year. “We’re concerned about letting people have different genres of music -- music that appeals from (ages) 18 to 65.”

BART is expected to be busy heading into Golden Gate Park. Given the chillier-than-August weather, attendees might want to consider bringing a light jacket, according to NBC Bay Area weather staff.
