Palo Alto: Little League Ballpark Not A Historic Resource

Ty Cobb visited there. Sixty years' worth of young ballplayers have run out grounders and learned the fundamentals of the game there. But the Little League baseball field at 3672 Middlefield Road in Palo Alto is not an historic resource, as far as the city's Historic Resources Board is concerned.

The Palo Alto Daily News reports that Jason Yotopoulos's effort to get the field recognized, and to block the installation of a light pole that would double as a Verizon Wireless cell phone tower, failed.

Also, Yotopoulos has little to no connection with the local Little League organization, the newspaper reported.

So all the nice things he pointed out, like the visit of Hall of Famer Cobb to the field, its dedication in 1952, weren't taken into account.

The local Little League, meanwhile, gets plenty of money from Verizon for use of the tower, which might not get to be installed if the place was declared historic.
