Pedestrian Bridge in Moraga Near Landslide Closed After Heavy Rains

Moraga officials are keeping an eye on the temporary Canyon Road Bridge and its pedestrian pathway, which could be compromised by an existing landslide, officials said Friday.

A landslide on nearby EBMUD property began to move during recent heavy rains, officials said Friday.

The temporary bridge has been determined to be safe and remains open to vehicles and bicycles. However, pedestrian access on the pathway is closed, according to a release from Moraga Police Chief Jon King.

Moraga officials are arranging for excavation that would relieve pressure on the landing of the pedestrian structure to prevent damage, King said.

A recently built retaining wall for the temporary bridge is working as designed and is deflecting the landslide and protecting the span.

Moraga officials have asked the East Bay Regional Park District to close a portion of the Lafayette-Moraga Regional Trail between the bridge and the Valle Vista Staging Area.

The bridge over the San Leandro Creek, also called Moraga Creek, is located within the town of Moraga, south of Constance Place and north of the Contra Costa County line.
