In the spirit of 1776 – the birth year of the United States of America – 76 people on Monday took the oath to become U.S. citizens on the deck of the USS Hornet stationed in Alameda.
The newest U.S. citizens hail from 26 different countries, ranging from every continent not named Australia and Antarctica. Most of the freshly-minted Americans came from China followed by Philippines, India and Mexico.
Safety, representation and opportunity were just some of the reasons why the 76 people chose to become citizens.
