Petaluma Couple Dead in Apparent Murder-Suicide

Man attacks Wife, Kills Himself

A Petaluma teacher and mother of four is dead after police say her estranged husband shot her, and then turned the gun on himself.

Police say the woman was leaving an attorney's office at 10 Keller St. in Petaluma on Sunday afternoon when the shooting occurred. Both the man and woman were taken to Santa Rosa Memorial Hospital, where they were pronounced dead. Police said the man's wounds appeared to be self-inflicted.

Police have not released the names of the two people involved, but friends of the family tell the Santa Rosa Press Democrat they are Kevin Conover, 41, and Kim Conover, 43.

Kim Conover was a second-grade teacher at Meadow Elementary School, and mother of four children.

Friends of the couple who were at the shooting scene said the two had been having marital troubles, and may have been in the process of getting a divorce. The Press Democrat reports that Kim Conover had been meeting with divorce attorney Jeff Zimmerman before the shooting.

Police say the couple's children were in the area at the time of the shooting, but were unhurt and were taken by authorities.

A police lieutenant said the last homicide in Petaluma was two years ago.
