Pygmy Sperm Whale Washes Ashore at Point Reyes National Seashore

A pygmy sperm whale that washed onto a beach near Abbotts Lagoon in the Point Reyes National Seashore has died.

Lauren Sherr from the Marine Mammal Center in Sausalito said a call came in Thursday about 2:45 p.m. regarding the beached whale. When response teams arrived to the scene Friday, the animal was dead, the center confirmed.

National Park Service rangers moved the whale, a young male, above the tide line late Thursday afternoon so it would not wash out to sea.

A team from California Academy of Sciences is transporting the animal to San Mateo for a CT scan so more can be learned about the animal.

The Marine Mammal Center said in a statement a full necropsy is planned to determined the cause of death.
