Sheriff's Deputies Investigate Killing on Highway 4 in Pittsburg

The Contra Costa County Sheriff's Office has identified the driver who was shot just before crashing his car into the center divide on state Highway 4 in Pittsburg Saturday afternoon.

Tomas Mendez, 20, was a resident of Pittsburg.

Mendez was driving east on Highway 4 around 2:55 p.m. Saturday when the driver of another vehicle, thought to be a Honda, began shooting at Mendez's Dodge Stratus, according to sheriff's deputies.

Mendez subsequently crashed into the center divide and was later pronounced dead at the crash site. An autopsy has been scheduled for Monday to determine the official cause of death, according to sheriff's deputies.
