Police and Marin County sheriff's deputies were investigating an armed robbery Tuesday morning at a department store in Corte Madera, sheriff's officials said.

At least two suspects, including one person with a handgun, confronted a UPS driver and a mall employee near a Nordstrom store at the The Village, sheriff's officials said. The mall worker appeared to have been seriously injured.

The suspects, meanwhile, remained at large Tuesday evening.

The two suspects were described only as a masked gunman and a getaway driver in a white van who reportedly was the one who assaulted the mall employee.

Central Marin police Lt. Theo Mainairs said the 72-year-old employee, a man named Victor who takes out cardboard for mall businesses, happened to be standing in the wrong place at the wrong time, right in the path of the suspects. But the scene was secure at about 11:30 a.m.

"Right now, I have no reason for anyone to be concerned for their safety," Mainairs said. "It does appear that the vehicle that was involved in this did leave the area.

“We’re still trying to determine the total number of people who were confronted at the time," he added.

The mall employee suffered gashes above both eyes and to his head, police said.

Officers were canvassing the area, continuing to search for the suspects Tuesday evening.

NBC Bay Area's Sam Brock contributed to this report.

Mall security went store by store. We have heard there is SWAT at Nordstrom with guns drawn.
