Redwood City Police Arrest Arson Suspects

Suspects in Redwood City are not suspected of gang involvement.

Redwood City police have arrested two men suspected of lighting a pair of vehicles on fire early Monday morning, police said.

Police and firefighters responded to a report of fire at an apartment complex at 210 Linden St. around 3:30 a.m., according to Redwood City police. Arriving firefighters found two vehicles set ablaze, one that was parked in front of the apartment building and a second that was on the property next to a carport.

Both vehicles were destroyed before the fire was extinguished and the cause was determined arson, police said. No one was injured.

Investigators went to a nearby gas station, where a witness remembered a man buying gas to fill a gas can, police said.

After reviewing the station's video surveillance, an officer identified a suspect and found him walking in the neighborhood, according to police. The suspect, who was later identified as Moris Pena, 23, of Redwood City, was arrested on suspicion of arson.

Further investigation led investigators to a second suspect, Raul Gomez, 36, of San Mateo County. Gomez was also located and arrested on suspicion of arson.

There was no indication that the case was gang related, or that either suspect was connected to another suspicious fire that damaged an apartment complex in Redwood City two weeks ago.

Two units and several vehicles in a carport at 523 Stambaugh St. were damaged on June 13 in a fire that police have since determined to be arson. Anyone with information about either case is asked to contact Redwood City police Detective Stahler at (650) 780-7620.
