Police Searches for Palo Alto Safeway Shooting Suspect and Victim

Police have asked for the public's help in locating a suspect and a victim who fled after a shooting occured late Friday in the parking lot of a store in Palo Alto.

The shooting occurred near the Safeway in the city's Midtown at 2811 Middlefield Rd., according to police. Officials said victim fled the area in a white Lexus SUV with a paper license plate after the shooting suspect fired multiple rounds from a semi-automatic handgun into the vehicle.

Officers weren't able to locate a victim or others involved in the shooting but a preliminary investigation revealed that the driver of the Lexus got into a confrontation with the suspect, police said.

Witnesses told officers that the suspect confronted the driver, who police described as a black man in his 20s or 30s, as he was getting into the Lexus. The vehicle appeared to have a shattered window, police said. 

Responding officers located the vehicle and pursued it to Highway 101, where officers lost sight of the car.
