A Fairfield woman suffered life-threatening injuries when she was attacked Thursday morning in her yard by one of her dogs, Fairfield police said.
Police responded at 8:45 a.m. to a call from a neighbor of the 29-year-old victim. The neighbor heard the victim screaming for help in her backyard in the 1600 block of Kentucky Street and saw the woman on the ground under attack from a large dog.
"He was just mauling her body," said neighbor Yolanda Kendrick. "Her arms they looked like they were being torn from her body & her face was all bit up her arms everything."
The attack was occurring in the farthest reaches of a large yard away from the woman's home and the street when police arrived. Officers saw the woman lying face down and bleeding profusely from both arms with a large dog standing over her, police said.
"He was biting with so much force, he was dragging her across the ground with his bites," said Kendrick. "She was just screaming stop and he wouldn’t."
The dog quickly alerted to the officers' presence and charged the fence where they stood. An officer shot the charging dog with his handgun, killing it, police said.
Officers determined the woman's injuries were life-threatening and she was taken to a trauma center and later flown by helicopter to a surgery center in the Bay Area where she is listed in serious condition, police said.

There were multiple dogs in individual kennels on the property and the dogs were described as a special breed of hunting dog, Lt. Greg Hurlbut said.
The dog attacked the woman when she opened its kennel to give it water, police said. Humane Animal Services in Fairfield is leading an investigation of the attack, police said. A call to the agency was not immediately returned this afternoon.
