Politics of Pot Weighing Heavy in SF Club Proposal

A neighborhood in liberal San Francisco is making a stink about a proposed medical marijuana dispensary in the quiet Sunset district.

Bay Area Compassion Health Centers wants to open its doors on Taraval at 32nd. But the district police captain wrote a letter to the Planning Commission expressing concerns about the center attracting crime like fights and homicides.

Police Commission member Petra DeJesus says the City should not be fighting a legal business.

"I don't think this department should spend time and money to wedge a campaign against dispenseries to divide community," DeJesus said.

While the politics of pot plays out at City Hall, the neighborhood seems divided. Some are anxious to have access closer to home. Others are worried about patients re-selling marijuana on their streets.

The planning commission will consider those concerns before giving the club a green light. The commission has a scheduled hearing next week.
