Classes were canceled for a day-and-a-half at Richmond High School due to a power outage apparently caused by faulty or damaged school equipment and by Wednesday afternoon it was unclear if the school will reopen on Thursday, according to West Contra Costa Unified School District officials.
At a little before 1 p.m. Tuesday, the power in and around the school went out, according to district spokesman Marcus Walton.
When it became clear that the power would not be coming on any time soon, the district canceled classes and sent students home.
"It's my understanding that power in the area came back on in the evening," Walton said.
But the lights were never restored on campus and it appears as if some kind of school equipment is responsible.
"We don't know if it's related. We don't know what caused the outage," Walton said.
When school officials learned that power wouldn't be restored by Wednesday morning, they sent out a notice to families that students should stay home.

By Wednesday afternoon, it was still unclear whether the campus will be open for classes on Thursday.
"We're waiting to figure out what the plan for tomorrow will be," Walton said.
It's unclear what caused the outage in the surrounding neighborhood, but the campus outage isn't related to PG&E equipment, according to utility spokeswoman Tamar Sarkissian.
