New rules that would clamp down on medical marijuana in San Francisco have some advocates of the drug hopping mad, according to reports.
A law up for approval Tuesday would limit how many medical cannabis dispensaries could open up in the Excelsior neighborhood on the city's southern edge, according to the San Francisco Examiner.
The neighborhood already has three dispensaries; the new law would put new dispensaries through a "tougher approval process," the newspaper reported.
That may leave some would-be marijuana merchants in the lurch.
Gary Tabachnik is one of them -- he's tried for two years to open up a dispensary he wants to call Lucky Dragon at 4130 Mission Street.
Currently, dispensaries must open up in areas allowed to them under a 2005 city law -- which means 90 percent of the city is already off-limits.
Finding a place that's legal to rent and then finding a landlord willing to rent is very difficult, Tabachnik told the newspaper.
The restrictions, authored by Supervisor John Avalos, would apply to pot clubs opening up within 500 feet of an existing pot club, the newspaper reported.
Fans of medical marijuana call Avalos a "dragon slayer" and have called for his head -- figuratively, of course.
