A small group of protesters made a lot of noise Thursday from the roof of Wheeler Hall on the Cal campus.

They chained themselves together with colorful PVC-like pipe and stood on a ledge near the roof of the building.

The Daily Cal newspaper says Chancellor Robert Brigeneau canceled classes at Wheeler for the rest of the day so that police could deal with the situation.

The students are apparently protesting budget cuts

As darkness fell on the campus, a group of about six adults remained on the edge while hundreds of students gathered below. Police in riot gear stood between the students and Wheeler Hall.

Police on the scene said their highest priority was the safety of the people on the ledge which is four stories, or approxiamately 60 foot off the ground.

The Oakland Tribune reported the protesters have issued a list of demands that includes:

  • cutting university fees
  • ending cost-cutting efforts at the university
  • "democratizing" UC's governing Board of Regents;
  • stopping police oppression.
