Protesters Picket Against Israeli-Owned Ships at Port of Oakland

A protest against Israeli policies towards Palestinians was held Saturday morning as activists pledge to block an Israeli-owned ship at the Port of Oakland.

Protesters say they will rally with pickets in an attempt to block the ship from unloading its cargo at Berth 57 at the Port of Oakland around 5 a.m.

Similar actions were taken against the Israeli-owned ship Zim Piraeus in August when a five-day blockade forced the boat to depart for Los Angeles with most of its cargo still on board.

Workers with the International Longshore and Warehouse Union refused to cross picket lines to unload cargo from the Zim Piraeus in August, and protesters Saturday are hoping for an identical outcome.

"We ask the ILWU to carry on its long historical tradition of opposing injustice and honoring community picket lines. Let's keep the pressure on and continue this tradition of labor blockades against
oppression," the "stop ZIM action committee" said in a statement.

The activists say they are protesting the more than 2,100 Palestinians killed by Israel in Gaza, and the destruction of much of the region's infrastructure.
