Puppy Found Tied to Brick in Gilroy's Uvas Creek

We think River is a Yorkshire terrier mix, perhaps with a Maltese.

A Gilroy man who rescued a small dog from Uvas Creek in Christmas Hill Park is being hailed a hero.

Hector Beltran says he was looking for crawdads earlier this week when he heard a little dog yelping nearby.

Beltran quickly discovered a small honey-colored dog in distress. The dog's head was just above the water line.

The little thing had a rope tied around its hind legs. On the other end of the rope was a brick.

Beltran rescued the pup who he has since named River. He said he's already had her checked out at a Gilroy veterinarian and that he filed a police report.

If you know anything about this case of animal cruelty, call the Gilroy police department.

Beltran is keeping River for now, but tells KSBW in Salinas that he isn't sure she will be able to be a permanent member of his family.
