Rain Returns to Bay Area, Snow Blankets the Sierra

Storm brings slick roads, causing problems for travelers on Interstate 80 heading to the Tahoe-Reno area

Rain showers returned to the Bay Area on Sunday, soaking the North Bay first before spreading through the region to the South Bay and beyond.

The low-pressure system produced heavy rainfall at times, and forecasters said there’s a slight chance of thunderstorms. New rainfall will measure between 0.25 and 0.50 of an inch across the region. High temperatures averaged about 65 degrees, the National Weather Service said.

The storm also brought south-southwest winds from 14-23 mph, with gusts of up to 30 mph.

The rain in the Bay Area tapers off by Sunday evening, but clouds are expected to linger in most areas.

Halloween will bring partly sunny skies with a 20 percent chance of rain after 11 a.m., the weather service said. By Monday night, late trick-or-treaters may get damp, as forecasts call for a 60 percent chance of rain before 11 p.m.

As usual, the Bay Area rain translated into a winter storm warning in the Sierra Nevada, with snow accumulations above 6,500 feet until 11 p.m. Sunday, the weather service said.

Travelers to the Tahoe-Reno area should be wary of slick roads and reduced visibility on Interstate 80 and Highway 50, forecasters said. Chains are required on all vehicles, except those with four-wheel drive with snow tires from Kingvale in Placer County to the Donner Lake exchange near Truckee, Caltrans said.

Early Sunday afternoon, Caltrans was reporting that I-80 was shut down in both directions between Kingvale and Donner Lake due to two accidents, one in each direction.
