Rare Sighting of Pufferfish Near Monterey Bay May be Due to El Niño

A local conservation group made an unusual find near Monterey Bay.

Members of the group “Save Our Shores” said they spotted two pufferfish near Marina State Beach. The organization is working with biologists and other experts to verify the species because it is very rare for pufferfish to be this far north.

Experts believe that if the fish are what they seem then warmer El Niño weather is likely why they were found in Monterey.

El Niño is also thought to be the reason why huge numbers of red crabs are washing ashore California beaches this year.
